When most people hear “Nicaragua”, they always remember that old saying: “Nicaragua, land of lakes and volcanoes”. Nicaragua has the biggest lakes in Central America, and they are known as Xolotlan and Cocibolca Lake. When it comes to volcanos, well, maybe not the biggest in the region, but they are very numerous, attractive for climbing and some of them even active.

From north to south, our volcanoes are: Cosiguina, San Cristóbal, Telica, Cerro Negro, El Hoyo, Momotombo, Apoyeque, Masaya, Laguna de Apoyo, Mombacho, Zapatera, Concepción, Maderas.
One very remarkable point is that, every volcano has its own characteristics, such as type of soil, type of eruptive reaction, and geographic location. Location wise, some of them are in the middle of a lake, such as Zapatera volcano and its neighbour Concepcion volcano which together form Ometepe Island located in the middle of Cocibolca Lake. When it comes to volcanic eruptions, the most dangerous is Cerro Negro volcano, because it is the most active and its type of eruption is the explosive with very liquid lava flows. With respect to elevation, very important if you enjoy climbing: the lower of them is Apoyeque at 518 meters and the highest is Concepcion at 1610 meters.
