Introducing to leon, Nicaragua Located in the west of the country, also known as the "university city" or "breadbasket of Nicaragua", the department of León has an area of 5138.03 km ² and a population of approximately 441,308 inhabitants spread out over ten municipalities: León (department head ) Nagarote, La Paz Centro, Quezalguaque, Larreynaga, Malpaisillo, El Sauce, Telica, The Jicaral and Santa Rosa del Penon. History The city of León was founded in 1524, the day of the Holy Trinity, by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. Was located in the middle of the Province of Imabite, a flat shaped network on Lake Managua and Momotombo front. This location is about 30 km from the present city of León and is known as Leon Viejo, the ruins are turned into tourist allure.
University Before 1980, the city of León enjoyed enormous settlement of farmer who had rented houses that professors, teachers, and students. Its university was founded in 1813 being the last founded in America before independence. Leon had the usufruct of university facilities and one of the largest faculties of medicine and law in Central America. In 1947, with President Anastasio Somoza García, was raised to the status of National University and in 1958 his son, President Luis Somoza Debayle, granted by decree of autonomy (National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, UNAN). In 1982 a decree of the Government Junta of National Reconstruction universities divided it into two, separating the core of Managua León (UNAN-León and UNAN-Managua).
